Interior Minister Gideon Sa'ar will resign within 48 hours, the Interior Ministry announced Sunday, after he officially submitted his resignation letter to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's office for approval.

Sa'ar announced his resignation in September for "personal reasons," sparking surprise from MKs across the political spectrum and a scramble to replace him as Minister.

It is still unclear who will replace Sa'ar in the government, and who will fill the role of the Minister of the Interior.

Among the top candidates to join the government include MK Yariv Levin (Likud) who recently ended his role as chairman of the coalition, as well as MK Gila Gamliel (Likud), Deputy Minister Ofir Akunis (Likud), and MK Miri Regev (Likud).

Communications Minister Gilad Erdan (Likud) was also a front-runner for the position, but another discussion is underway whether or not to make him the Ambassador for Israel in the United Nations as well - and he is expected to be turned down for the role.
