Kerem Shalom Crossing

Israel announced on Saturday night that the Kerem Shalom and Erez crossings into Gaza will be closed on Sunday, following Friday night’s rocket attack on the Eshkol region.

The crossings will only be opened for passage of goods and people in humanitarian cases, according to the announcement.

The Coordinator of Government Activities in Judea, Samaria and Gaza informed the Palestinian Authority of Israel’s decision. This is the first time that Israel has closed the crossings to Gaza since Operation Protective Edge last summer.

Gaza terrorists fired a rocket towards the Eshkol Regional Council area on Friday night. It exploded in an open area and caused no physical injuries or damages.

Friday’s incident marked the second time since the end of Operation Protective Edge that Gaza terrorists have attempted rocket fire towards Israel.

Last month, a mortar attack was launched by Gazan terrorists against southern Israel, in breach of a ceasefire signed in August. Hamas, which breached numerous ceasefires during the operation, denied responsibility for the attack and later announced it had arrested the perpetrators.

On Saturday night, Chaim Yelin, head of the Eshkol Regional Council, predicted that it is only a matter of time until the next operation against Hamas.

"It doesn't make a difference to us who fires," Yelin told Arutz Sheva. "Hamas or rebellious groups; we demand a military response against rocket fire on the residents of the state of Israel."
