Hezbollah leader Hassan Narsallah declared on Tuesday that the group is against the intervention of the United States in Syria, the Lebanese-based Daily Star newspaper reported.
Nasrallah’s comments in a televised speech came hours after the Pentagon confirmed that the U.S. had begun airstrikes against Islamic State (IS) targets in Syria.
"Everyone knows that Hezbollah is against [IS]. However, that doesn't mean we support U.S. military intervention in the region," he said, according to the Daily Star.
“Hezbollah is against any U.S.-led international coalition that uses 'terrorism' as an excuse to military intervene in Syria and Iraq," Nasrallah clarified.
He further argued that the U.S. supports a “terrorist state” such as Israel, adding that President Barack Obama supported Israel in the war in Gaza this summer.
“Under the false pretext of fighting terrorism the U.S. seeks to take control of the region,” claimed Nasrallah, according to the Daily Star.
He also said the group opposes Lebanon's participation in the U.S-led international coalition fighting terrorism.
"We are against Lebanon taking part in a U.S.-led coalition," he said. "The U.S. isn't qualified to lead an anti-terrorism coalition."
Hezbollah has made no secret of the fact that it is heavily involved in the Syrian civil war, sending fighters to battle rebels alongside Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad’s troops.
The group has also expressed concerns over IS. Nasrallah recently warned that the group is an “existential threat” menacing Lebanon and the whole region.
