A couple in their 30s and their two-year-old baby were killed in a gas tank explosion in Jerusalem on Sunday night.

The blast occurred on the third floor of a four storey building in the city’s Gilo neighborhood.

The baby was taken to the Shaare Tzedek Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The couple were pronounced dead at the scene.

Magen David Adom reported that 11 people were injured in the explosion, including a 60-year-old woman in serious condition, a man in his 80s who suffered moderate injuries, five people who were lightly injured, and two victims who suffered trauma.

All the victims were taken to the Shaare Tzedek and Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospitals.

Channel 2 News reported that police have closed the street to traffic and are asking people not to approach the area.

The building itself is in danger of collapse due to the explosion, the report said.

Police suspect that negligence caused the explosion. A gas technician was arrested and interrogated on Sunday night after police learned that he had done some work in an apartment next to the one in which the explosion occurred.

A similar incident in Netanya killed four people and wounded 88 in June of 2011.
