Hundreds of people took part in the funeral of Sraya Ofer, 61, a former colonel in the IDF reserves, who was murdered Friday outide his home in the northern Jordan Valley.
The funeral took place at the cemetery at Kfar Vitkin, in central Israel. Participants included family members, friends, and veterans of Israel's security forces who served alongside Ofer during his long and illustrious military career. Also taking part were Minister Uri Ariel and MK Moti Yogev, both of the Bayit Yehudi party.
MK Yogev, also a reserve colonel, commented on the fact that suspects in Ofer's murder have been caught and that security forces said they are not sure whether to classify the murder as having a criminal or nationalistic background. MK Yogev found the distinction irrelevant.
"Sraya Ofer was murdered by Arab murderers. That is a fact. Whatever their motives may have been,” he wrote on his Facebook page.
"Reserve colonel Sariya Ofer, a Jew who placed himself in mortal danger for years for the security of Israel, and recently for strengthening the settlement enterprise in the Jordan Valley, in the Land of Israel,” Yogev wrote.
"I wish to send condolences to his wife and children and his entire family. In his death, he commanded us to strengthen Jewish settlement and security in the Jordan Valley and throughout Israel.”
