Assistant Commissioner for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), James Malizia, said authorities had conducted an “extensive and complex criminal investigation,” which lead to the arrest of two men, suspected of plotting a massive, Al Qaeda inspired terrorist attack on a passenger train.

Chihek Esseghaier, 30, and Raed Jaser, 35, were arrested on “terrorism-related offenses” in Toronto and Montreal in an operation, titled “Project Smooth,” which was closely coordinated with the FBI.

Had the plot been carries out it would have resulted in "innocent people being killed or seriously injured,” Malizia said.adding that the RCMP’s primary focus throughout the operation was to ensure the “safety and protection of the public.”

“I want to reassure out citizens that while the RCMP believes the accused had the capacity and intent to carry out these criminal acts there was no imminent threat to the general public,” he affirmed.
