As Israel marks Holocaust Remembrance Day today Monday, the IDF is marking the tragedy with a number of memorial ceremonies and events.
Chief of the General Staff Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz is leading the March of the Living from Auschwitz to Birkenau, with 10,000 people from all over the world expected to attend. This is the first time the march will be led by a residing IDF Chief of General Staff.
The Chief of Staff is currently leading an IDF delegation to Poland. After being welcomed in a military ceremony held by the Polish Armed Forces at Krakow airport, Lt. Gen. Gantz is scheduled to visit a number of memorial sites, including Birkenau and Podgorze, reported the IDF Website.
During Lt. Gen. Gantz's visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau, he was joined by an IDF delegation of the Witnesses in Uniform program, accompanied by families of fallen IDF soldiers and a Holocaust survivor.
While visiting Warsaw, Lt. Gen. Gantz will hold a work meeting with the Polish Minister of National Defense, Mr. Tomasz Siemoniak, and Chief of Staff of the Polish Armed Forces, Gen. Mieczyslaw Cieniuch. He will also place a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Warsaw, where a military service will take place.
