Paramedics from the Magen David Adom Kiryat Arba branch acted heroically and thought quick under pressure and rare circumstances, and the result was a successful roadside delivery of a healthy newborn.
MDA received a call from a woman from Kiryat Arba-Hevron, Wednesday night, who was experiencing labor pains and needed to be taken to the hospital. The Mobile Intensive Care Unit of MDA Kiryat Arba branch, which has specially designed snow chains to allow for use in snow, were called to the scene.
However, as many roads were unmanageable and as the snow continued to fall, paramedic realized that the woman would not last the length of the ride to the hospital and instead pulled over next to Beit Ummar and delivered the baby on the side of the road.
After a successful delivery the paramedics continued their drive towards Shaare Zedek Hospital, which took about an hour and a half. Thanks to the quick thinking paramedics, the woman and child are now doing well.
The mayor of Kiryat Arba-Hevron, Malachi Levinger, praised the efforts of the MDA paramedics, saying, "Despite the bad weather we sanctify life and continue to help anyone who needs it. I want to wish good luck to the woman who gave birth and to thank the paramedic staff for their resourcefulness, for their discovery and for the assistance they gave to the mother."
The city established a special committee to deal with the snow and Levinger said volunteers and workers are on full alert to be ready to solve any problem that may arise. "I ask all residents to be vigilant and careful and to lend a hand to anyone who needs assistance," he added.
