Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai has ordered city workers to shut down all sports facilities in city schools. The order follows a tragic incident Tuesday in which a basketball pole at a local school collapsed, hitting and killing a 15-year-old.

Facilities will be shut down until they can be checked by safety experts.

“The city will cooperate and assist the police in investigating the disaster,” city officials said. “In addition, the mayor has ordered the establishment of an external committee of safety experts to examine safety protocol in the school system.”

The incident Tuesday took place as several teens played basketball at a high school court. One teen had grabbed the pole when it fell on him, causing him a serious head injury. Paramedics were unable to resuscitate him, and were forced to declare his death.
