Gathering Focuses on Legal Status of Jerusalem
International officials gathered at a conference in Israel's capital city this week to focus on the legal status of Jerusalem.
The International Alliance for Justice in Jerusalem is hosting the two-day event at the city's historic King David Hotel. Slated to end Wednesday, the conference featured a keynote address by Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat at its opening session.
Included were sessions on the political, judicial and diplomatic issues facing the city, dealing primarily with the status of Jerusalem under international law.
"Under international law Israel has a legal right to its capital Jerusalem,” said Jacques Gauthier, an international jurist and human rights advocate who founded the organization that hosted the event.
The International Alliance for Justice in Jerusalem is a Toronto-based not-for-profit organization with branches in various cities around the world.
"This conference analyzes and examines these rights from many different perspectives and discusses concrete options for the future status and peace of Jerusalem,” he said.
