The Knesset – which is in its springtime recess – is convening a special session Monday to confirm MK Shaul Mofaz as Head of the Opposition. The decision to convene the session was made by Knesset Speaker MK Reuven Rivlin.
Mofaz became head of the Kadima faction last week, and since Kadima is the largest opposition party in the present Knesset, that makes him Opposition Head as well. He replaces MK Tzipi Livni, whom he defeated handily in the Kadima primaries.
Mofaz has declared "the dawn of a new social age" and will nominate one of the MKs from his camp to head the Knesset's Finance Committee. The committee is currently headed by MK Carmel Shama (Likud) but according to a rotation agreement between the parties, Shama is to be replaced by a member of Kadima in May.
At the same time, the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, which has been chaired by Mofaz, will go to the Likud.
The leading contenders for heading the Finance Committee are MK Ruchama Avraham-Balila and MK Meir Sheetrit, who supported Mofaz in his struggle against Livni.
