The U.S. government was not completely honest with Jonathan Pollard before he was sentenced in 1987 to life in jail, New York Democrat Congressmen Eliot Rep. Engel said during his current visit to Israel.

“I believe the government was not completely honest with Jonathan Pollard when he pleaded guilty and that he was led to believe that he would not get as harsh a sentence as he wound up getting,” Rep. Engel added.

The Congressman has visited Pollard twice in prison, “Enough is enough,” he said. “It is ridiculous [that] it has been going on this long. He should be released as soon as possible – immediately."

During his visit to to Israel, Rep. Engel, another Congressman and Executive Vice Chairman of the Conference of Presidents Malcolm Hoenlein were attacked by Arab rock throwers while they were visiting the Jewish cemetery on the Mount of Olives. No one was injured.
