Shortly after MK Shaul Mofaz launched an unusually fierce attack on Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu Monday, calling him a "liar," the Knesset's Legal Advisor, Eyal Yinon, offered support for Mofaz's version of the events that caused the brouhaha.

Yinon clarified in a letter to the Prime Minister's Advisor for Contact with the Knesset that at no point in Monday's session of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee did Mofaz accuse Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz of lying with regard to the defense budget.

Mofaz angrily cut short the committee's session when he was informed that Arutz Sheva was running a headline that said he had leveled the accusation at Gantz. He then accused Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu of purposely leaking the untrue story to the press.

Mofaz is a member of the opposition Kadima party and a former Defense Minister and Chief of Staff of the IDF. He is a candidate for the position of leader of the Kadima party, where current chair Tzipi Livni has been teetering after recent polls showed the party losing popularity. He was a great supporter of the 2005 Disengagement from Gush Katif and was Minister of Defense during the Disengagement and during the forcible destruction at Amona in 2006
