A bill to prevent discrimination in the allocation of benefits to people suffering with polio has been passed for its first reading by the Knesset's Labor, Welfare and Health Committee.

The law would end discrimination between polio patients receiving aid whose history with the disease began prior to their aliyah to Israel, and those who acquired the disease while living in the country.

At present, those who come on aliyah and are suffering with the disease are not entitled to receive any compensation or benefits.

If passed, the new measure would ensure that polio patients who immigrate to Israel will receive the same compensation and stipends as those who were born here, and/or those who acquired the disease while already living here.
