Syria’s top Sunni Muslim leader told pro-Assad Lebanese Christian women, “We will prepare suicide bombers” if the West bombs Syria.
Ahmad Hasson, the official grand mufti of Syria told a delegation of Lebanese Christian women who support the Assad regime, “We will prepare suicide bombers who are already in your countries if you [the United States and Europe] bomb Syria or Lebanon.”
The women were expressing their condolences for the death of the cleric’s son who was killed by unknown gunmen during the Arab Spring uprising in which nearly 3,000 people have been murdered, most of them by force of Syrian President Bashar Assad.
His warnings came a day after Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem threatened "tough measures" against any country that recognizes the opposition Syrian National Council. European Union leaders already have come out in support of the formation of the new council but have not formally recognized it. Assad also has threatened to bomb Israel of NATO attacks Syria.
Meanwhile, the daily carnage continues in Syria. Government secret police and soldiers gunned down protesters in Homs on Monday one day after at least 31 others were murdered in clashes throughout the country.
Assad faces fiercer opposition from Kurds in Syria following the assassination of Kurdish opposition leader Mashaal Tamo.
The murder "will have a huge impact on the situation in Syria", said Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
Tamo's funeral on Saturday drew 50,000 demonstrators who called for an end to the Assad regime. Syrian forces opened fire on the crowd and killed at least two people.
