Libyans discovered a mass grave Sunday near the Abu Salim prison in the capital of Tripoli.

The grave contained the remains of some 1,200 bodies, according to a report broadcast on the pan-Arab Al Jazeera satellite television channel.

According to the report, the government of former dictator Muammar Qaddafi once used the prison, located in the south of the capital, to detain its opponents.

In addition, many of those who rebelled against the former strongman and led the uprising that eventually overthrew his government were also held there, Reuters reported.

Qaddafi is still at large, as is his son and heir-apparent, Seif al-Islam, with the National Transitional Council still searching for them.
