Robert Serry, UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, says there is no need to "overdramatize" the Palestinian Authority (PA) decision to receive a UN declaration recognizing their status as an independent state.

Abrogating the Oslo Accords, he added, would not be the right answer and would constitute "throwing out the baby with the bathwater." He expressed confidence that security coordination between the PA and Israel will continue after the declaration.

He voiced hope that the UN will not be "a theater for division," when the international community is in agreement over the desirability of a two-state solution for Israel and the PA.

Serry spoke at the World Summit on Counter-Terrorism, The International Institute for Counter-Terrorism's 11th International Conference, Interdisciplinary Center (IDC), Herzliya, which took place this week.
