President Barack Obama traveled on Sunday to the state of New Jersey to tour areas that were damaged last week by Hurricane Irene. Obama reassured residents affected by the hurricane that the federal, state and local governments will be there to help them rebuild.
“Part of what has helped to avert even worse tragedies and greater loss of life is the extraordinary response and far-sided thinking of state, local and federal officials,” Obama said.
“The main message I have for all the residents, not only of New Jersey but all those communities that have been affected by the destruction that occurred as a consequence of Hurricane Irene,” added the president, “is that the entire country is behind you. We are going to make sure that we provide all the resources that are necessary in order to help these communities rebuild.”
