Israel is hosting and participating in the Wheelchair Basketball European Championships Tuesday at Nazareth, in the Galilee. The men’s teams are divided into two groups, one of which includes Israel, Italy, Turkey, Belgium, Switzerland and Great Britain.
Five men’s and three women’s spots for the London 2012 Paralympic Games will be up for grabs after both Great Britain’s men’s and women’s teams automatically qualified for those Games as the host nation in the final games, to be held in two weeks.
Italy, the defending champion, and France are the favorites to win the championship.
On the women’s side, Israel will team up with defending champion Germany and France and the Netherlands, Turkey, Spain and Britain.
The International Paralympic Committee, the global governing body of the Paralympic Movement, organizes the summer and winter Paralympic Games and serves as the International Federation for nine sports.
Wheelchair Basketball will be one of 20 sports featured at the London 2012 Paralympic Games. The International Paralympic Committee was founded in 1989 and says it is committed to enabling Paralympic athletes to achieve sporting excellence and to developing sport opportunities for all persons with a disability from the beginner to elite level.
It also aims to promote Paralympic values, including courage, determination, inspiration and equality.
