Police Chief Yochanan Danino took time Wednesday to visit a traffic police center and address the officers there. Danino praised the officers for their work, and reminded them of the heavy responsibility they bear.

The traffic police “do holy work, saving lives,” Danino said. While working with drivers, he continued, “we must act professionally... in order to strengthen public trust.”

Traffic police are often the “front line” in police interactions with the public, he explained. For that reason, he said, it is particularly important that they be courteous and professional while dealing with those they meet on the job. Whether this makes it easier for the person on the receiving end of a traffic fine is a moot point.

Officers showed Danino the latest equipment used to enforce traffic laws. Commanders explained their many activities. They also presented the police chief with data on trends in traffic crime and traffic accidents in Israel and around the world.

The true test of the latest techniques and ideas being put into use will be their effects on the ground, commanders said.
