China's top military official visited Judaism's holiest site Monday.

Chief of Staff Chen Bindge referred -- in a note he placed between the stones of the Western Wall -- to the long years of friendship between the Chinese people and the people of Israel.

Bindge wrote that the friendship will continue  to flow from the hospitality shown to the Mir Yeshiva in Shanghai during World War II.

“I know that this yeshiva continues its operations today in Jerusalem,” he said, “ and serves as another bridge between China and [Israel].”
