A hit-and-run truck driver turned himself in to police hours after a shocking accident in which he killed a pregnant woman and her husband who was trying to change a flat tire.
The victims were identified as Kiryat Malachi residents Chai Ziv Krief, 24, and his wife Shani, who were driving to Holon, adjacent to Tel Aviv, on Sunday when their car was disabled by a flat tire.
Kreif was changing the tire on the narrow shoulder of Highway 4, south of Tel Aviv, when the truck driver from Yaffo plowed into them. A second truck also hit them because the driver was not able to stop in time, but when he was able to do so, he tried to help the victims. Medics pronounced them dead at the scene.
After the first truck driver turned himself into police, escorted by his father, authorities said he had no criminal record, and he said he fled because he was in shock at the accident.
His account of the tragedy is being questioned because of several details that have been contradicted by witnesses and by cameras mounted on the highway.
The Krief couple was buried Sunday night in Kiryat Malachi, located between Be’er Sheva and Tel Aviv.
