Ron Prosor, Israeli envoy to Britain, is taking over the vacant post of Ambassador to the United Nations, after several weeks of political wrangling between Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman.
Netanyahu had favored returning Dore Gold to his former position as ambassador to the UN, but Lieberman preferred Jewish Agency chairman Natan Sharansky. The Foreign Minister already irked Prime Minister Netanyahu last summer by naming Meron Reuven as temporary ambassador, after Prof. Gabriella Shalev left the post.
Prosor has been a popular ambassador in Britain, where he frequently wrote in British newspapers. He vocally attacked efforts to de-legitimize Israel. Prosor’s replacement in Great Britain is National Security Advisor Uzi Arad.
Prosor has been rumored for the post for several months. He previously served as Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs before taking up his current position in London in 2007. Fluent in English and German, he has frequently appeared on BBC and Sky News.
