An Arab citizen of Israel was shot late on Thursday night after speeding toward IDF soldiers at a checkpoint along Route 60, north of Hevron. Soldiers feared he was attempting to run them down, and opened fire.
The man was critically wounded. He is currently receiving care at Hadassah Ein Karem hospital in Jerusalem.
IDF investigators are now attempting to determine why the man did not slow down as he approached the checkpoint. One possibility is that he was attempting to run soldiers down in a terrorist attack. Another is that he did not notice the checkpoint in time.
The incident took place just hours after a Palestinian Authority terrorist opened fire at IDF soldiers in northern Samaria. Soldiers fired back, killing the terrorist; there were no IDF casualties.
Less than two weeks earlier, a terrorist had attempted to murder IDF soldiers at a checkpoint near Shechem. The terrorist, Khaldoon Samoudi, had raced at soldiers with a bomb, but was shot and killed before he could complete the attack.
