After two murders on two consecutive days, a company of Border Police and Yassam special police units have been stationed in the city of Lod.
The city suffers greatly from Arab criminal gangs, and 12 people have been murdered there in the past two years. The vast majority of the murders have not been solved by the police, who admit they have poor intelligence within the Arab crime gangs and cannot get anyone to testify against the murderers, even though they know who they are.
Lod's mayor, Ilan Harari, sent an urgent letter to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu Monday, in which he demanded that police activity in the city be greatly intensified. He asked that three Border Police companies be stationed there.
The Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) is to assist the police in collecting the illegal weapons in the city, especially in the Arab sector.
Mayor Harari said that police “have simply got to solve the problem,” and that “if the situation continues, we will simply close down the city.”
The Minister of Public Security, Yitzchak Aharonovich, said that collection of illegal weapons is a top priority. “There are places in Israel where, if you placed a magnet above the community, the entire community would rise and float in the air,” he said, paraphrasing a sentence attributed to former IDF Chief of Staff Refael Eitan regarding a certain Arab village.
Infiltration of Israel political system, media, courts and police by radical leftist elements in recent years has created a situation in which Arab crime is on the rise. Within the criminal world, too, Arab crime families are reportedly becoming stronger than Jewish crime families.
