Professor Shabtai Rosen, 93, an internationally known legal expert and member of the Turkel Committee, died at home in Jerusalem Tuesday night after heart failure. He was buried Wednesday morning at Har HaMenuchot Cemetery in the capital.

Justice Yaakov Turkel, who heads the committee investigating the May 31 flotilla clash, said that his passing is a “great loss for his family, for the People of Israel, the legal community around the world and for the committee.” Rosen was appointed to the committee in June.

During his career, he was awarded the Israel Prize for jurisprudence and the Hague Prize for international law.  He also served as Israel’s deputy representative to the United Nations and filled various positions on several international organizations, including those based in Geneva.

Rosen was the legal advisor for the Foreign Ministry from 1948 to 1967.

Judge Turkel said that there are no plans to choose a replacement for Professor Rosen.
