The Ariel University Center recently hosted the online Math Olympics, a competition including groups from Israel and around the world.

The university center has held Math Olympics competitions for individuals since 2006, but this was be the first group competition. Dozens of groups from Poland, Romania, Russia, Georgia and elsewhere took part. The Israeli teams included students from Tel Aviv University, Bar Ilan University, and Ariel. Each team consisted of 10 participants.

During the competition each team was sent nine math problems, and had 15 minutes to solve each one. According to initial results, the team from Romania took first place. Second place went to an Israeli team from Bar-Ilan University, and third went to a team from Krakow, Poland. The team from Ariel took seventh place.

The Ariel University Center began hosting math competitions after a graduate won second place in a similar competition in Cyprus. The goal of the events is to challenge students and encourage them to tackle difficult math problems.
