The second edition of a Passover Haggadah by a leader and ideologue of the pre-state liberation movement Lehi (Fighters for the Freedom of Israel) has come out to a warm reception by Knesset Members.
"This Night We are Going Out of Egypt", written by the late Dr. Yisrael Eldad, was ceremoniously delivered to the Israeli legislature by MK Prof. Aryeh Eldad, well-known Zionist leader and Dr. Yisrael Eldad's son.
The book includes the traditional text of the Passover Seder, in which the divinely-ordained plagues ravaged Egypt and set the stage for the dramatic exodus of the Jewish people. It also contains notes and thoughts by Dr. Eldad on the issue of Passover, freedom, redemption and exodus from Egypt.
During the ceremony, Knesset Speaker Reuven Rivlin and other Knesset members took turns reading portions from the Hagaddah.
"Passover, by its very nature as the holiday of redemption, is intended to be a time of national accountability," said MK Eldad. "Reading the Haggadah, and the rationality of Yisrael Eldad's approach, match the reality of life now more than ever. The redemption of the nation of Israel requires national courage; with a strong hand G-d took us out of Egypt, and through the strengthening of the mind and heart, we will protect that redemption."
Knesset Speaker Rivlin said, "this year I will conduct the Seder from this Hagaddah."
The Lehi underground was founded and led by revolutionary Zionist poet Avraham 'Yair' Stern until his assassination by the British authorities in 1942.
