New Wells to Serve Galilee

(IsraelNN.com) Dr. Yisrael Gav, a hydrologist who is in charge of planning water resources at the Water Authority, said Sunday that two new wells being drilled, Even Menachem 2 and Goren, will “improve maintenance of the water supply in the western Galilee without a negative effect on the abundance of water in any of the springs.”

"The western Galilee receives its water from local sources and from the Sea of Galilee, which is currently 1.48 meters beneath the bottom red line, and the dependability of the water supply to the area is lessened.”

Israel is facing the most severe water crisis ever recorded in modern times after five straight drought years. Its water supply is at an all-time low and streams are in danger of going dry, as are other water sources.

The Water Authority said that “the water produced from the wells comes from the Lower Kanomen Aquifer, which has no connection to the springs that feed Nachal Kziv or Nachal Betzet. The water produced from the wells will come at the expense of water surpluses in the aquifer which would otherwise be lost at its western drainage base.”

The Authority added that the wells will improve the quality of water in the area and make it possible to reduce the production of water at the Shomera wells, which do affect the Betzet system, thus improving the spring's abundance over time.”
