Andraus wrote that 'we will continue with all the steps necessary to establish our state, such as using 'Naalin-style' tactics'Police have opened an investigation against Zuhir Andraus, the editor of the Arabic publication Ma-Alhadat, and a frequent contributor to several Israeli newspapers, most notably Yediot Acharonot. Andraus will be investigated for incitement to rioting and violence, following a complaint filed by the Im Tirzu Zionist student group.
Police decided to open the investigation after receiving complaints about a recent interview conducted with him on Channel 10, and for articles that appeared on Yediot's website, that urged Arabs to act violently against IDF soldiers. According to police attorneys, "it appears that Andraus called for violence against IDF soldiers, or at least supported it. The suspect objects to treaty arrangements between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, and instead supports the 'violent struggle' of Palestinians against Israel. In fact, he writes clearly that the 'Palestinian national liberation movement' cannot avoid violence, and that the whole world supports Palestinian violence against Israel."
In August, the Im Tirzu group asked Attorney General Menachem Mazuz to open an investigation against Andraus for an article he wrote for the Yediot website, in which he said that despite attempts by Palestinian Authority chief to "destroy the Palestinian liberation movement, we will continue with all the steps necessary to establish our state, such as using 'Naalin-style' tactics." Andraus was referring to the weekly riots by Arabs and foreign radical anarchists that take place at the site of the security fence in the Modiin area. The riots are accompanied by stone throwing and firebombs, and several IDF soldiers have been injured in the riots, some severely.
In its letter, Im Tirzu said that it viewed Andraus' writings "as serious incitement and support for terror and violence against IDF soldiers. We cannot continue to ignore these calls for violence and incitement on the part of a community leader and opinion-maker in the Israeli-Arab sector. We call on authorities to deal with the problem before it gets out of hand and leads to actual acts of violence by Andraus' readers and supporters."
