The US Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington DC is once again educating visitors about the horrors of anti-Semitism and bigotry, having reopened its doors Friday following a fatal June 10th attack by hardened anti-Semite and white supremacist James von Brunn.

On Thursday, the museum held a candelit memorial vigil for the slain 39 year-old African-American security guard Stephen T. Johns, who died trying to protect visitors.  Dozens of flowers placed in memory of the young guard still adorned the threshold of the museum's new doors, which were replaced after being riddled with bullets by the 88-year-old von Brunn.

I cannot express enough how deeply sorry I am it was Mr. Johns, and not my father who lost their life yesterday

Also on Thursday, von Brunn's 32-year-old son, Erik, released a statement to ABC News, condemning his father's beliefs and actions, and decrying the results of his father's shooting attack.

"I cannot express enough how deeply sorry I am it was Mr. Johns, and not my father who lost their life yesterday [Wednesday]," wrote Erik.  "It was unjustified and unfair that he died, and while my condolences could never begin to offer appeasement, they, along with my remorse is all I have to give."

Erik, who grew up in the shadow of his father's hatred, also offered advice to Aryans, "For the extremists who believe my father is a hero: it is imperative you understand what he did was an act of cowardice," Erik wrote. "To physically force your beliefs onto others with violence is not brave, but bullying. Doing so only serves to prove how weak those beliefs are. It is simply desperation, reminiscent of a temper tantrum when a child cannot get his way."

On Friday, several of the returning visitors were among those who were evacuated from the museum on Wednesday, as von Brunn attempted to shoot down those who came to learn from and honor the victims of Nazi Germany's 'Final Solution'.  Yet even those who were entering the museum for the first time said they came as a response to von Brunn and all those who hate Jews, blacks, and other ethnic minorities.

The museum set up a fund on Saturday for the Johns family, which will benefit his 11 year-old daughter and his wife of one year. Two days previously, the American Jewish Committee set up a similar fund.

According to authorities, Johns opened the door for von Brunn immediately prior to the shooting.  While Johns was killed, von Brunn is said to have been critically wounded by return fire.  An impending court hearing will review updates of von Brunn's condition before determining a legal course of action against him.

Von Brunn, a member of the elite high-IQ club Mensa, was sentenced to 11 years in jail in 1983 after attempting to kidnap members of the U.S. Federal Reserve Board by use of legal weapons. He has a long history of affiliation with Aryan-related groups, having written his own Nazi manifesto, "Kill the Best Gentiles!" and painting a portrait of neo-Nazi John Crommelin, according to a report by the New York Daily News.

Authorities found notes in his car, which was parked near the Holocaust museum, espousing his loathing of blacks and Jews, calling the Holocaust "a lie" and asserting that US President Barack Hussein Obama "does what his Jew owners tell him to do."
