In a congratulatory letter to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, the US-based National Council of Young Israel (NCYI) urged him to reject global pressures to agree to a Palestinian state. The organization also called for action to obtain freedom for imprisoned Israeli agent Jonathan Pollard.

NCYI leaders referred to unnamed "external forces" that "may call upon you to take a conciliatory approach...."

The April 1, 2009 letter, released to the press on Monday, was signed by Shlomo Z. Mostofsky, Esq., President of the NCYI, and Rabbi Pesach Lerner, its Executive Vice President. The NCYI represents over 150 Orthodox synagogues throughout the United States and Canada, with another 50 congregations in Israel affiliated with its sister organization, Yisrael HaTza'ir.

"During your term in office, we respectfully urge to you stay true to the positions that you consistently advocated during your long and illustrious career," Mostofsky and Lerner wrote on behalf of both the North American and Israeli congregations. The NCYI leaders referred to unnamed "external forces" that "may call upon you to take a conciliatory approach towards the Palestinians," adding, "[We] implore you to stand firm and reject any pressure to accede to calls for the creation of a Palestinian state. We believe that an independent Palestinian state would merely compound the complex problems that currently exist and open the door to a new wave of acts of terror directed at innocent Israeli civilians."

Noting that Netanyahu had voiced opposition to the Disengagement Plan, which uprooted Jews from the Gaza region and northern Samaria, the NCYI letter stated, "We trust that you will not cede any of Israel's land to the Palestinians and will maintain the position that we hold the land of Israel in trust for future generations." As for Israel's capital, the synagogue organization leaders wrote, "We believe that you agree that there are no circumstances which can justify partition of any portion of Jerusalem."

The NCYI also had advice regarding obtaining the return of captive IDF soldier Gilad Shalit, held by the Hamas jihadist regime in Gaza since 2006: "We therefore encourage you to take a hard line approach and keep the Gaza crossings closed pending his return home."

As for the Israeli agent in American hands, Mostofsky and Rabbi Lerner further said, "[We] hope that when you meet with President Obama, you will directly ask the President to commute Jonathan Pollard's prison sentence. ...It is time to set Jonathan Pollard free and send him home to Israel."

Iran, the NCYI letter said, poses a threat "to your citizenry and our nation," and so the organization hopes that Netanyahu "will be able to deal with Iran swiftly and forcefully".

"We wish you much bracha and hatzlacha [blessing and success] and sincerely hope that your journey as Prime Minster is a smooth and successful one," Mostofsky and Rabbi Lerner concluded.
