Hamas Video: Fatah Torture in Preparation for January 2009

by Gil Ronen

(IsraelNN.com) A Hamas video circulated on one of the terror group's main internet forums and featured on the Israeli 'Blue Eye' website claims to show the results of abuse and torture of Hamas men by Fatah security forces in Judea and Samaria. Pictures of torture victims and corpses are shown among scenes which seem to show Fatah gunmen attacking Hamas's supporters. The audio is an Arabic-language interview with a Hamas spokesman, against a somber musical background theme.

Hamas and Fatah are jockeying for position in advance of January 8, 2009. On that date, Palestinian Authority Chairman and Fatah leader Mahmoud Abbas's four-year term as president of the PA will end, according to Hamas. Hamas said it will cease to recognize Abbas as president after that date and will replace him with one of its own leaders, according to a resolution recently approved by the Islamic movement's legislators.

Abbas's Fatah terror group says parliamentary and presidential elections should be held together in 2010. "I think that the elections for parliament and the presidency should take place together, in January 2010. We will decide, and issue a presidential order accordingly," Abbas told the Hebrew-language Haaretz newspaper in September.

According to recent reports, the main reason for Israel's transfer of Hevron into Fatah's control is that Israel wants to strengthen Abbas's grip over Judea and Samaria in anticipation of the fighting which may erupt in January.
