JERUSALEM

Barkat        53.4 %

Porush       43.4 %

Gaydamak  Less than 4%

Exit polls projected that Barkat would win 50 percent of the ballots with strong support from the national religious community, though Barkat is an avowed secular Jew.

A millionaire who made his fortune in high tech, Barkat, like his principal opponent Meir Porush, has vowed to fight against any attempt to divide the capital in negotiations with the Palestinian Authority.

The results reflect the fears of both the secular and national religious sectors that Porush would favor the hareidi religious community at the expense of the rest of the city. At two polling stations, Gerrer Hasidim said they voted for Barkat.
