Why should Sderot suffer alone? The Amit School System has decided on a unique act of solidarity with the suffering population of Sderot: It will "sound an alarm" - i.e., stop all studies - in its nationwide schools whenever the Kassam rocket warning system goes off in Sderot.

Amit, founded in 1933, is the largest religious-Zionist school system in the country, with "tens of schools" around the country, according to its website.  Among them are elementary and high schools, dormitories and educational villages, ulpanot and yeshivot, a pre-military yeshiva, hesder yeshiva and girls' seminar.

The directors have now decided that studies in its schools will come to a halt whenever a rocket warning stops studies in Sderot and environs.  Amit employees around the country will similarly stop working when the alarms sound.

Amit Director-General Dr. Amnon Eldar said, "We have been accompanying the students, teachers and families of Sderot from the beginning, and we embrace them with warmth.  As a sign of solidarity with the children whose studies are interrupted sometimes several times a day, we have decided to stop our own studies every time the alarm is sounded in Sderot.  We will stop, think, identify with, and even recite Psalms together on behalf of the welfare of the people of Sderot."

Alon Davidi, Chairman of the Committee for a Secure Sderot, was very happy to learn of the Amit initiative, and told Arutz-7, "We hope that other schools will follow this example.  It should be clear to all that there's no reason a 16-year-old student in Sderot should not be able to study while his counterparts around the country study with nary a care.  We view this as a welcome wake-up call to the government to fulfill its duty to provide security to its residents."
