Former Arab MK Muhammed Miari was questioned today by police on suspicion of having entered an enemy country without official permission. He was questioned "under caution" for 2.5 hours in the Petach Tikvah station about his recent visit to Syria.
Another former Arab MK, Muhammed Kanaan, has also been summoned for police questioning regarding the same trip.
Three MKs of the Balad party - Azmi Bishara, Wasel Taha, and Jamel Zkhalka - accompanied them on the visit. They returned to Israel two days ago, saying they plan to return to Syria "if necessary." A police investigation will be opened against them as well.
MK Azmi Bishara, head of the Balad party, said, "Israel won't tell us with which Arabs we can forge ties."
Asked if he had inquired after the fate of the kidnapped IDF soldiers while he was in Syria, Bishara said that he not. His explanation: "Official contacts are already underway, and we had no way of reaching the relevant authorities."
