Among the activities still scheduled are Youth Day at the Knesset, a reception at the Jerusalem Municipality by a Meretz Party councilman, and an ongoing film festival in one of the halls of the Jerusalem Convention Center (Binyanei HaUmah).
The Jerusalem Open House, which is co-sponsoring the international WorldPride events next week, announced the postponement of the large gay march through Jerusalem streets "because of the war." Many observers say that the parade would have been canceled in any event, because of the tremendous opposition that had been building up. Jerusalem City Councilwoman Mina Fenton, who initiated a petition that collected tens of thousands of signatures against the march, told Arutz-7, "There is no question in my mind that even had there been no war now, the march would not have been held."
The organizers of the homosexual event, however, say they will hold the march in Jerusalem at a later date, and promise that in any event, the other events of the International World Pride week will take place as scheduled. These include "gatherings, exhibits, performances, communal meetings, a film festival, and more."
These events are to take place in various locations, including Hebrew Union College, the Kol Haneshamah Progressive Judaism Center, the Knesset, Jerusalem Cinematek in its Binyanei HaUmah location, Mishkenot Shaananim, Barbour Gallery in Nachlaot, Yellow Submarine in Talpiot.
Former Chief Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu has sent a letter to Jerusalem Mayor Uri Lupoliansky, asking him to work to cancel the week-long homosexual film festival scheduled for the Jerusalem Convention Center, which is partly owned by the Jerusalem municipality.
Youth Day, which is billed as welcoming "youth between the ages of 15-25, including... those who are unsure," will begin at the Knesset next Monday at 12 noon. The event's promotional literature states, "After this day, it will be impossible to ignore us. Everyone will understand and remember for a long, long time that the proud [Hebrew gaieh] youth has what to be proud of..." The day will begin with the convening of the Knesset Children's Rights Committee, headed by self-proclaimed social rights champion Labor MK Shelly Yechimovich, at which up to several dozen youths of the HLBT movement are expected to take part.
Arutz-7 spoke with Yechimovich's spokesman, and submitted the following question: "One of the purposes of the day's activities is to entice youth to consider a homosexual lifestyle. How can it be considered a child's 'right' to be persuaded or enticed in this manner, with grave consequences that can affect the rest of his life?"
Four hours later, the reply came back: "MK Yechimovich is not interested in relating to this issue."
The Youth Day activities will continue afterwards to Kol Haneshamah, at Rakevet St. 57, between 2:30 and 7 PM; they promise that press will not be there, but that the area will be protected.
"Some people have concentrated on protesting the event itself," says the head of Atzat Nefesh (Advice for the Soul), which offers help to those who wish to combat their homosexual tendencies, "but they don't realize that after it's all over, it will leave much damage in its wake - youths who are confused, or worse, about their own sexuality. This is a problem that must be addressed, but on the whole, that is not happening."
He says his volunteers are willing to hand out pro-straight literature at these events, but "at present, we simply have no money to print it up - even though it's just a question of a few thousand shekels." Click here for more information.
Rabbi Yehuda Levin - head of the Brooklyn-based Jews for Morality organization, who is in Israel for the express purpose of stopping the WorldPride event in Jerusalem - told Arutz-7,
"There is moral and strategic equivalency between the military battle that Israel is currently fighting and the WorldPride initiative in the Middle East in general and in the Holy Land specifically. There is a general lack of resolve on the part of Israel against its Arab enemies, largely because of world pressure - but they don't realize that you can't appease the enemy because that just strengthens it. The same is true in the war against this type of licentiousness. First they said they just want civil rights, and then they demanded same-sex marriages, and then adoption rights, and now they want a lowered age for consensual relations. This is the famous 'salami' piece-by-piece system... - and all this, on both fronts, juxtaposed at the crucible of Jerusalem, G-d's palace, coming to a head on Tisha B'av and the days following."
