Memorial Service Marks 38 Years Since the Disappearance of the Dakar

(IsraelNN.com) A memorial service was held in Jerusalem’s Mount Herzl Military Cemetery, marking 38 years since the sinking of the navy’s Dakar submarine.

Attending the annual event were Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz, IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Dan Halutz, Navy Commander Major-General David Ben Ba’ashat and members of the bereaved families.

69 Israel Navy sailors perished on board the Dakar, which disappeared in 1968, and despite many years of searches was not found until 1999. It had sunk to a depth of 2,900 meters, 500 kilometers from the Israeli coast. A check of the sub found that it had not been attacked, but rather sank because of a technical failure.
