Rabbi Yosef Dismisses his Son?s Halachic Ruling

(IsraelNN.com) In his Saturday night Torah lecture, Rabbi Ovadia Yosef had harsh words for a halachic ruling announced last week by his eldest son, Rabbi Yaakov Yosef.

Rabbi Yaakov Yosef last week ruled that soldiers who are not absolutely certain as to who cooked the food in a military kitchen should not eat since it is entirely likely the food might have been prepared by a Russian non-Jewish or Druze soldier. Rabbi Yaakov pointed out there is an increasing number of non-Jewish Russian and Druze soldiers working in military kitchens, and therefore, persons who are scrupulous about maintaining a kosher diet may not eat from IDF kitchens.

Rabbi Ovadia Yosef called the ruling “inciteful” and rejected his son’s line of reasoning, dismissing the ban on eating in military kitchens, all of which are under the supervision of the IDF Chief Rabbinate.

Analysts see the incident as another sign of the ongoing rift between the Torah luminary and his eldest son.
