Almost all members of the US House of Representatives have signed a letter addressed to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, urging him to use diplomatic means to obtain an extension to the internation arms embargo on Iran, JTA reports.

The embargo is set to expire in October. Previous statements made by Pompeo indicate that the US plans to unilaterally restore a broad range of sanctions against the Iranian regime.

The letter, signed so far by 384 of the 435 House members, states that: "We are concerned that the ban’s expiration will lead to more states buying and selling weapons to and from Iran ... This could have disastrous consequences for U.S. National security and our regional allies. We urge you to work with allies and like-minded partners, including through a new U.N. Security Council resolution, to extend these provisions in order to prevent Iran from buying and selling weapons."

AIPAC has already indicated its support for the letter's content.
