The Jerusalem Municipality has announced that this year, the burning of the hametz (sreifat hametz) will take place at one centralized location on the outskirts of the city.
Special containers will be placed in all neighborhoods where the city's residents will place their hametz. Then, early on Wednesday morning, municipal vehicles will make their way through the city's neighborhoods and gather the hametz from the receptacles. The hametz will then be taken to a designated area near the Atarot industrial zone to the north of the city, where it will be burned according to halachah (Jewish law) by the city's Chief Rabbis, Harav Amar and Harav Stern, together with mayor Moshe Leon.
Mayor Leon said that the city was doing its best to think of creative solutions to the unique problems presented by the current situation, and to prevent people from gathering in public. "The challenges are not easy ones," he said, "but we are exerting ourselves to the utmost in order to prevent the epidemic spreading to a huge number of people. I am delighted that the chief rabbis responded to my request and will be helping with the city's burning of the hametz this year."
