Betzalel Smotrich, MInister of Transportation and a member of the right-wing Yamina party, has lamented the power of Israel's High Court to commandeer the Knesset in favor of the Left. At issue is speakership of the Knesset. Yuli Edelstein, the Knesset's current speaker, is a member of Likud and the High Court has ruled that the speakership could be wrested from him and given over to the Left, even though such a maneuver would depend on the backing of the anti-Zionist Arab Joint List party, some of whose members have glorified terrorists who kill Jews.

The speaker of the Knesset determines the composition of permanent Knesset committees which set the agenda in legislative matters. In the recent elections, the right wing parties earned 58 Knesset seats as opposed to the left wing's 47. The Joint List collected 15 Knesset seats. The right wing parties have threatened to boycott and thus delegitimize a vote for Knesset speaker under the present circumstances.
