The military commitment of IDF soldiers who combine Torah study with army duty has been extended from seventeen to eighteen months. These soldiers will no longer be enlisted in mixed units, such as artillery, where women serve alongside men. Many rabbis had sharply criticized their students being placed in mixed units.
These soldiers will also be part of the army's new emphasis on recruitment into vanguaard combat units. As such, they will serve in infantry, armored corps (tank), and combat engineer units.
