Amir Ohana, Minister of Justice, announced yesterday that if he continues in his present position following formation of a new government, his first priority would be enactment of an 'overrule clause' that would allow the Knesset to overrule Supreme Court rulings by a 61 majority vote. Dorit Beinisch, retired Superme Court president, took exception to this possibility and labeled it "disrespect for the rule of law." Yet, ever since Aharon Barak became president of the Court in 1995 and encompassing Beinisch's tenure, jurisdiction of the Supreme Court has been expanded so that the legality of building in Judea and Samaria, for example, has been impugned by the Court. Ever since Barak, the Court has been widely recognized as identifying with the values and aspirations of Israel's political Left.
