Ahmad Awald, a resident of the Hevron area Palestinian Authority village of Dura, who was sentenced to life in prison for his involvement in the 1992 strangulation murder of Hagai Shalhavet in Jerusalem, will be released from prison under a release plan after serving 28 years in prison, following a decision on Wednesday by a special parole board which met at Ma'asiyahu Prison, despite the opposition of the murder victim's family, according to Yediot Ahronot.
It was not determined what the motive for the murder was, nor was it alleged that the murder was for security or nationalistic reasons. After Supreme Court Justice Neal Hendel ruled against early release in 2013, the state has withdrawn its opposition to Awald's release, saying the danger he poses is low.
