Chairman Yair Golan of the Democratic Union Knesset faction and Members of Knesset Tamar Zandberg and Stav Shaffir have asked Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit for a legal opinion on the attempt to legislate a direct election for Prime Minister at this time.
The Knesset members of the Knesset claimed that "1. This is a hasty change of the system of government and 2. part of an election campaign." They added, "If this question reaches the Supreme Court, we are concerned that it will become a 'political punching bag' as part of an election campaign."
