Israeli ambassador to Washington Ron Dermer has revealed at a conference of a Jewish organization that Chief of Staff Aviv Kochavi of the Israel Defense Forces and National Security Advisor Meir Ben Shabbat support the initiative to establish a defense alliance between Israel and the United States, according to the Globes website.
Dermer said he spoke directly to them and to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, who also supports the idea. The ambassador said such an agreement will give a powerful expression to the ties between the two countries, provide another layer of deterrence against the most extreme threats facing Israel and provide a basis for a dramatic upgrade of Israeli-US relations. He said that Israel will continue to be America's most important ally in the next 50 years for two reasons: security and technology.
