An earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale hit southern Guatemala, the US Geological Survey said.

The quake, which struck early Saturday morning, was centered approximately 50 kilometers (31 miles) southwest of Guatemala City, the country's capital.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.
