A Health Ministry committee, which has examined nutritional deficiencies in Israel, is recommending that food manufacturers be required to enrich milk and dairy products with vitamin D, salt with iodine and flour (including gluten-free flour) in folic acid, iron and vitamin B12, according to Yisrael Hayom.
According to data collected at the Health Ministry and the health funds, 22.6 percent of the population suffers from iron deficiency, 5.5 percent suffer from B12 deficiency and 12 percent suffer from folic acid deficiency. The recommendations require the approval of the Deputy Minister of Health and legislation in the Knesset.
