(JTA) — The Boston Red Sox have hired the Tampa Bay Rays' Senior Vice President of Baseball Operations Chaim Bloom as their new head of baseball operations.

The Red Sox finished the season with a record of 84-78 and missed the postseason for the first time since 2015, while the Rays won the American League wild card game and challenged eventual league champion Houston in the AL Division Series. Tablet Magazine reported that Bloom, his wife and two sons live close to the Rays Tropicana Field so that Bloom, who is Sabbath observant, can walk to home games on Friday night.
